National Archives Singapore

As you know technology is always changing through time and it get better and better. It is replacing old ways of keeping information,like now computers are use to store information. But not to forget that the old  forms information need to be kept as well. So the National Archives of Singapore was establish in 1968 by an act of parliament and became part of the National Heritage Board in 1993. It was establish to preserve records of national and historical significance. Not only to do preservation it also allows the public to views records , organizes exhibitions and conducts educational programs on archives and record management.

NAS have 3 different departments,Archives Conservation Lab,Image Preservation Lab and Sound & Moving Image Lab.

Archives Conservation Lab

It’s main mission is to restore, maintenance and storage of Straits Settlement records(SSR), maps, building and land survey plans and government file documents.As you know that paper is fragile and lost of potential threat that will affect the quality of the paper.noxic treatment, deacidification, leafcasting, mechanical cleaning, manual repair, tissue mounting, encapsulation and high value (rare) book binding.

Image Preservation Lab

It is where book or news paper are being scan and being keep in microfilms, and later on microfilms are being stored with care.The scanners come in different size, depending  on materials to be scan with different scanner.

Sound & Moving Image Lab.

This department deals with tapes and important videos. Example of videos like 1993 the national day. Tapes are recording using old tape record they usually burn from the disc. Not only that they records tapes they also film important days like the moving of the merlion. Tapes are used as it can be stored for many many years.
